Ashanti was born in Glen Cove, Long Island, New York, USA on October 13, 1980. R&B singer best for her self-titled debut album, which yielded the hit song “Foolish” and set a record for opening week sales.

She sang in the gospel choir when she was three and began writing songs in high school. She worked as an extra in two Spike Lee movies, including Malcolm X.
