Gerard was born in Paisley, Scotland, UK on November 13, 1969. He won an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight for his performance as King Leonidas in Frank Miller’s adaptation of the graphic novel 300. His performances in P.S. I Love You, Gamer, Law Abiding Citizen, and Olympus Has Fallen gained him additional fame.

He studied at Scottish Youth Theatre as a teenager, and was the president of the Law Society at Glasgow University in Scotland. He did not meet his father until he was 16 years old.
