Richard was born in Michigan, United States on November 9, 1974. In 2014, this Michigan attorney began serving on his state’s Supreme Court. Afflicted from birth with a vision-affecting medical condition known as retinitis pigmentosa, he is well known for his advocacy of the blind and visually impaired.

He graduated with highest honors from the University of Michigan and subsequently earned his law degree from Northwestern University. Before becoming a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, he launched an unsuccessful Democratic primary campaign for the office of Michigan Attorney General.

Did you know: He was able to enter law school only because he challenged the Law School Admissions Council to change the requirements of its universal admissions test (the LSAT) to make the exam less discriminatory against blind people.
